Howto switch between two iTunes Libraries with PILS

iTunes is my favorite application to organize all my ‘audio-stuff’. Unlike iPhoto it can handle even very large libraries (total listening time today would be 48 days, 8 hours, 18 minutes and 43 seconds).

Unfortunately this collection has twice the size of my iBooks internal harddrive, so most of it is stored on an external 200-gig firewire drive. Apple forgott to implement a switch-between-two-different-iTunes-libraries-feature or even better including the possibility to sync files back and forth.

Doug Adams made a solution named iTunes Library Manager. But since I don’t need to switch between more than two libraries I came up with something that is more adapted to what I need.

Since I’m not very creative about creating names, but I want to something for my ego and the name should also describe what the script is doing, I call it:

Phils iTunes Library Switcher (pils)

it will allow you to have two different iTunes Libraries and will switch between them with the click of a button or two, okay mabe three. It’s free and you can change the source-code if you want. Since I’m open to improvements, don’t hesitate to mail me a copy of your improved version.

The script needs some manual setup, since I was a bit lazy writing a detailed howto, just check the included readme-file.

If you’ve problems to set it up or have ideas, complains and feature-requests, leave a comment.
